With ID, Schoharie County vets get discount

3/25/2015

fter two years, Schoharie County's Veterans Discount Program is still going strong.
The program was developed to say thank you to military veterans for their service and to encourage them to file their military discharge papers (DD-214) with the County's Clerk's Office.
When they do, they're issued a photo ID card which they can use to receive discounts on both goods and services from participating merchants.
Since "Return the Favor" was launched in December 2012, said County Clerk Indy Jacyox, nearly 112 businesses and 700 vets have signed up.
Efforts to expands the pgoram by involving both more bets and businesses are ongoing, she said.
"We encourage all veterans to bring their DD-214 Military Discharge document in to be filed at the County Clerk's office," Ms. Jaycox said.
Those who can't find or who don't have their discharge papers can work with Eilene Fisher at the Schoharie County Veteran's Service Agency to obtain official copies from the state.
"We know there are still many honorably discharged veterans who haven't yet come into the office," Ms. Jaycox said, "and we'll continue our efforts to make them more aware of this opportunity.
"We also thank the merchants for theiur participation and hope this is beneficial to them by increasing foot traffic and sales."
Additionally, Ms. Jaycox said, due in part to the efforts of the NYS Association of County Clerks, the State DMV has waived the fee for vets to receive a special veterans insignia on their license when it's added between regular license renewal dates.
Previously, there was an extra charge if they weren't already paying for a renewal or other license transaction.
The county Clerk's Office issues the Veteran's ID cards Monday-Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm.
Merchants can sign up at any time.
