The Schoharie Valley Singers, formerly known as The Depot Lane Singers, will present their 40th season spring concerts , “We Shall Overcome” – Songs of Hope and Freedom, this Friday and Saturday.
Concerts are scheduled for Friday, May 3 at Cobleskill-Richmondville High School, and Saturday, May 4 at the Duanesburg Reformed Presbyterian Church.
Both concerts begin at 7:30 pm.
Included is a pop song (“Lean on Me”), a freedom song (“Tshosholoza”), prayers (“We Shall Overcome”, “Prayer of the Children”), and uplifting songs about the goodness of humankind (“Turn the World Around,” “Shine the Light”).
Each of the 12 songs programmed for this concert have one thing in common: the message that, no matter what it is that tries to hold us down, we will triumph over it.
The Schoharie Valley Singers were originally founded as The Depot Lane Singers by the late Frances B. Tripp, a former Schoharie High School music teacher.
Ms. Tripp founded the Depot Lane Singers in September of 1979, after her retirement from active teaching.
In 2005, direction of the group was passed to Mitch Haverly, a retired music teacher from Berne-Knox-Westerlo Central School.
Earlier this year, the Depot Lane Singers were renamed as the Schoharie Valley Singers and incorporated as an independent not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization.
At that time, Middleburgh Jr./Sr. High School music teacher Benjamin April was named as the third director of the Singers.
