A woman wants the public to know that the man convicted of killing her stepson may be back on the street.
Stacy George notified the Times-Journal in an email early Monday that Kevin Hodgins may be released on bail today, Wednesday, if Schoharie County Judge George Bartlett agrees.
Hodgins was convicted of second-degree manslaughter December 20 in the April stabbing death of Zachary George, Ms. George’s stepson.
Ms. George wrote––and Schoharie County District Attorney Susan Mallery confirmed––that Hodgins’ defense attorney submitted a bail application for Hodgins.
Ms. George wrote the T-J that she’s sending “this message to the public to notify them that there may be a chance of a murderer being released on bail until his sentencing date in February.
“Kevin Hodgins should remain incarcerated for the safety of the public.”
Hodgins will reportedly be sentenced February 6.
Ms. Mallery said she’d argue against granting bail.
“It’s a serious charge. He’s a threat,” Ms. Mallery said. “He may not remain here” because Hodgins’ family doesn’t live here.
But, Ms. Mallery added, she’s confident Judge Bartlett will make the right decision.
“It’s truly the Judge’s decision,” she said. “He’ll look at the facts and follow the law.”
Police were called to a Central Bridge apartment on April 6 after an argument between Mr. George and Hodgins.
Mr. George died at the scene of a stab wound to the neck.
Police at the time called the argument “a violent altercation that grew out of previous disputes.”
Police arrested Hodgins without incident, and he later pleaded not guilty.
Hodgins faces five to 15 years in prison at his sentencing.
