An apparent altercation in Summit last Monday is being ruled a murder-suicide by State Police.
The victims are Christina Arvidson, 31, and Dustin McMahon, 24.
Both died by gunshot wounds to the head, according to troopers. State Police ruled Ms. Arvidson’s death a homicide and Mr. McMahon’s a suicide.
State Police and the Schoharie County District Attorney investigated all last week, and the investigation is continuing.
“We know what happened, but that doesn’t mean we end the investigation,” said District Attorney Susan Mallery.
There are few details about the tragedy. Ms. Mallery said a witness saw Ms. Arvidson and Mr. McMahon earlier last Monday, “and things were fine.”
But when Mr. McMahon didn’t show up for work on Tuesday, his employer began making phone calls, Ms. Mallery said.
If officers know what happened, they’re not sure how it happened.
“Unfortunately, the only two who know are gone,” Ms. Mallery said.
She credited the Summit Rescue Squad with opening its office as a command center for the investigation.
“They did amazing things for us,” Ms. Mallery said. “They deserve our thanks.”
