With the water still high in the Schoharie Creek, it should be a great weekend to race on April 22 and 23.
The fourth annual Middleburgh Sloughter Canoe/Kayak Regatta and Triathlon Weekend will be sponsored by the Middleburgh Rotary. The cochairmen of the event are Matt Coltrain and Patrick Costello.
The triathlon is a new addition this year.
The canoe/kayak race will start at 11am on Saturday, April 22 with registration beginning at 9:30am.
The race, which measures approximately 5.6 miles, starts at the Fultonham rest area off of Route 30, and ends at Timothy Murphy Park in Middleburgh.
There are numerous divisions for ages, men, women, students, couples, and teams and prizes will be awarded.
The triathlon begins at 10am on Sunday, April 23, with registration starting at 8am.
The triathlon begins at Timothy Murphy Park with a 5.6-mile run to the Fultonham rest area, according to Mr. Costello. From the rest area, there is a bicycle ride back to the park in Middleburgh and then a return bike ride to the rest area. Finally, there is a 5.6 mile canoe/kayak leg back to Timothy Murphy Park.
The triathlon can be run as an "ironman" in which one person does all three events, or in teams for up to four members.
Prizes will be awarded.
Unlike last year, there should be plenty of water in the creek for the races.
There was little snow last winter and the spring was not very rainy, much different from this year, Mr. Costello noted.
"The way the water is flowing now and there's still snow up in the mountains, we're in pretty good shape to have good water," he said Monday.
"It's much more of a normal spring. We're predicting a very good run."
For more information, participants should contact Mr. Costello at 827-7772.
In addition to registering the day of the races, there is also registration available on-line at middleburghrotaryny.org. Participants can also pay registration fees for the race or races on-line.
