Can't attend the March for Science?
Or the People's Climate March?
Two local groups are offering alternatives.
Modeled after January's Women's March, the March for Science, set for Earth Day, April 22 in Washington, DC, hopes to bring attention to the importance of science in everyday life.
The April 29 People's Climate March, also in DC, is more specifically focused on climate change.
In Schoharie, the positive action group Schoharie Blue Streak will be hosting its own science event on Earth Day, April 22, on the front lawn of the DAR's Lasell Hall.
The event will run from 1-3pm and is listed on the March for Science Satellite Marches website.
The three declared candidates for the 19th Congressional District-an election that won't take place till November 2018-will be at the event and other speakers are expected as well.
There will be tables for voter registration, for help sending send postcards to Congressman John Faso, and to raise awareness on the importance of the environment.
Organizers are hoping to draw the kind of crowd-more than 300-that the Women's March in Cobleskill did in January.
The following Saturday, April 29, Positive Action Cherry Valley will host a climate rally and march there, another sister march to the national effort, at 11am.
Organizers are hoping to draw participants from throughout the area.
They also hope to have information and displays at the Old Cherry Valley School afterwards.
